Description

Modafinil 200mg, also known by the brand name Provigil, is NOT a sleeping aid. Instead, it is a wakefulness-promoting medication clinically developed to help reduce excessive daytime sleepiness caused by conditions such as narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), and obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS). By supporting alertness and sustained focus, Modafinil helps individuals remain awake and function effectively throughout the day or night.

For people with sleep apnoea, Modafinil is typically used in combination with primary treatments, such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), to further combat residual daytime drowsiness. It does not replace other prescribed therapies but works alongside them to enhance overall wakefulness and mental performance.

Modafinil acts on several key neurotransmitters in the brain—including dopamine, norepinephrine, and glutamate—while reducing the effects of GABA, the brain’s main inhibitory neurotransmitter. Side Effects

• For this reason, it is not safe to get pregnant while taking modafinil. You should use effective contraception while taking it and for at least 2 months after stopping it.

Prescribing Summary: Adult Dosage

Indications and Dosage:

• Narcolepsy or Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): The recommended dosage is 200 mg administered orally once daily upon waking. Although doses of up to 400 mg daily are well-tolerated, they do not demonstrate a consistent increase in efficacy over the 200 mg dose.

• Shift Work Sleep Disorder: The recommended dosage is 200 mg administered orally once daily, taken approximately one hour prior to the commencement of the work shift.

Special Population:

• Geriatric Patients: Initiate therapy at a reduced dosage with careful patient monitoring due to the potential for increased sensitivity.

Therapeutic Use: This agent is indicated to promote wakefulness in individuals experiencing excessive somnolence associated with the aforementioned sleep disorders.
